USDA NOP — What the Certification Covers

The USDA National Organic Program establishes production, handling, and labeling standards for organic agricultural products. For date production, NOP certification requires:

Farm Level — No Prohibited Inputs

No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. No synthetic fertilizers. No ionizing radiation. No GMOs. Annual on-site inspection by a USDA-accredited certifying agent.

Farm Level — Transition Period

Documented field history demonstrating the required 36-month transition period without prohibited substances prior to certification. Verified by the accredited certifying body.

Processing Level — Segregation

Organic and conventional products physically separated at all times. Processing equipment cleaned and verified free of conventional residue before organic production runs. Written organic system plan maintained and audited annually.

Export Level — Transaction Certificate

Transaction certificate issued per organic shipment, tracing the product from the certified operation to the importer. Chain-of-custody records maintained at each handling step.

Chain-of-Custody Documentation

This documentation chain satisfies the requirements of USDA NOP, Whole Foods Market vendor qualification, and most organic retail buyer audits in the US and Canadian natural food channel.
